Saturday, 17 April 2010 - West Kent RC 10 - Q10/22 (Harrietsham)
|
|
With a full schedule on the cards for this weekend, our entries in the West Kent 10 were restricted to just Phil Bull and Shay Giles. Phil produced his best of the season so far with 22.15 to give him 4th place in both the fastest and standard categories. Shay went round in 24.27 to share 3rd place on standard with Ron Keeble (34 Nomads CC) with a plus of 6.33.
Mike Piper continued his good form this season to take 1st place, more than half a minute ahead of his nearest challenger.
My thanks to Shay for e-mailing the times.

Saturday, 17 April 2010 - Andover Wheelers 25 - P613 (Andover)
|
|
The P613 in Hampshire is a super-fast course. Therefore entries are usually well oversubscribed so “mere mortals” normally have little chance of getting accepted. The course has also played host to a Competition Record when Wendy Houvenhagel reduced the ladies 10 record to 19.50 four years ago.
But thankfully, Andover Wheelers ran this as a middle markers event; only open to riders that had previously not beaten 22.30. This gave the “slower” riders a chance to visit this haven of fast times.
Three of our riders made the 220-mile round trip and on a near perfect day they were all rewarded with a decent time. Garry Dunn was fastest in 24.05, followed by John Clegg in 25.16 and, in only his 2nd event after a 20-year lay off, John Maund was satisfied with his 26.51.
Bizarrely, it is very strongly rumoured that the course is approximately 1/10th of a mile long. This means that riders can “mentally” reduce their allocated finish time by around 20-25 seconds.

Sunday, 18 April 2010 - VC Elan Hilly 22 - QS/7 (Charing)
|
|
The Team were out in force for this, Paul’s 30th version of the Hilly TT, with 11 members gracing the start sheet. Originally scheduled for 28 February, it was postponed until today because of torrential rain on the original date. Whilst riders would have expected low temperatures back in February, they did not reckon on a near-zero degrees start this late in the year. But once the sun got up things soon warmed up.
Despite having produced a top rate ride the previous day, Phil Bull rose to the occasion again and returned in 52.43 to take 4th fastest and 2nd place on standard. Jamie Beecham also went well in 53.34 for 7th place and, supported by Peter Elms, we took the team award. Shay rounded off a good day to take 3rd place on Standard.
Fastest ride of the day came from in-form Dave Wheeler, his 52.15 almost a minute too good for second placed Malcolm Davies.
As well as crippling our air-space, the Icelandic volcano also impacted our event as some of the riders were stranded in Majorca!!

NEW MEMBERS

John Clegg. I was a member of Medway Velo Club for 38 years, but at the end of last month I was subjected to a certain amount of abuse from a fellow member that I had known for all of those 38 years. So I immediately submitted my resignation and I officially joined the Elan on 03 April. I began racing in September 1960 (for the Oval CC) but retired from racing in 1982. After a 17 year lay-off I began racing again in 1999 and, apart from a year out in 2008 for a hip replacement, have been racing ever since. My pb’s are 23.30 / 57.32 / 1.14. 26 / 2.02.44 / 4.25.51 / 218.60 all set when I was in my 60’s. Outside of cycling my main interest is my record collection of 4,000+ albums (mostly Rock / AOR). Oh, yes, and I get a lot of satisfaction out of writing these weekly reports.
Ken Drury. Ken raced back in the 40’s and 50’s for the Polhill Racing Club before giving up cycling to enjoy family life. He started riding again some years later and in 1994 he did a one-off race in the 50-year commemorative LVRC road race and time trial. Now in his 80’s he rides an average of 100 miles a week regardless of weather and his rides usually end up at Paul’s shop for a cup of tea and a chat. He plans to return to racing again in this week’s Bexley 10. Good luck Ken!!
Peter Elms. Peter left the club at the end of last year and joined Colourtech so that he can pursue his first love of road racing. But as Colourtech are not affiliated to CTT he has re-joined the Elan so that he can ride the occasional time trial.
Rik VanDieren has also re-joined.

At their Annual Dinner on 11 April, I was elected as a life member of The Fellowship of Kent and Sussex Cyclists. The Fellowship is an all male organisation and was founded in 1944. Its purpose is to band together cyclists who, over a period of years, have by their enthusiasm and service proved a valuable asset to our sport.
The Dinner was one of the best that I have ever attended with entertaining speeches, lively cross toasting and a seemingly endless supply of food.
